LIGHTHEARTED IN THE SOUTH OF IRELAND
Friendly, refreshing, inviting: These are the adjectives often used to describe the metropolis of the south, Ireland’s third-largest city. Its 120,000 inhabitants are disproportionately proud of their hometown. This may be just a gross generalization, but Cork undoubtedly radiates a healthy self-confidence. The locals are especially friendly, humorous, and delighted to stop and chat. The heart of this busy port city is located on an island between two arms of the Lee River. The city centre, together with the neighbourhood to the north and south of it, can easily be explored on foot.
HOME OF THE LAST DRAGON
The name Cork is derived from the Gaelic word “Corcaigh”, meaning “Marshy Place”- the delta at the mouth of the Lee River has a history of settlement dating back to the Ice Age. According to tradition, Cork was founded by St. Finbarr in the late 6th or early 7th century, precisely at the spot where he tried to slay Ireland’s last dragon. That is also where he built the monastery that stands today on the southern outskirts of Cork.
BRIDGES AND BEER
Cork is today an important business centre. Cork’s rivalry with Dublin extends even to beer brewing. “Murphy’s” and “Beamish” are the two brands of stout that are brewed here. Cork has many well known sights and is famous for its bridges, docks and the Georgian villas that stand in stark contrast to the modern commercial buildings. The county town of County Cork is also the cultural centre of the south: jazz, folk and film festivals add a cultural dimension to life in the city on the Emerald Isle. There are also superb golf courses nearby, as well as glorious sandy beaches. The Gulf Stream ensures that the climate is mild year-round.
