UNIVERISTY TOWN WITH CAR PLANTS
John Keats, the poet, described Oxford in the early 19th century as “the most beautiful city in the world”: strong words, but Mr. Keats had reason enough, even then, for this statement. Large parts of the city are shaped by the traditional architecture of Oxford University’s historic buildings. Major museums also contribute to the city’s reputation as England’s intellectual centre. Less well known is the fact that Oxford was an important centre of the British auto industry, although service industries are the major ones today.
TRAINING GROUND FOR SCIENTISTS AND POLITICIANS
Oxford, England’s oldest university, developed quickly into am acknowledged academic centre, when King Henry II, after a quarrel with the French King Louis VII, forbade English students in 1167 from attending the University of Paris. The city’s growing importance, favourable location and good connections to London gave rise to a culture of learning and it was not long before teachers and students from all over the world came to visit. Oxford University still ranks as a source of first-rate leaders: from Isaac Newton to Margaret Thatcher, Indira Ghandi and Hugh Grant. Bill Clinton also spent several semesters in Oxford as a student.
AN INNOVATIVE MUSIC SCENE
In the second half of the 20th century, Oxford developed into a prosperous modern city full of contrasts. It is possible to turn off from a crowded shopping street and find oneself amidst quieter surroundings within a few seconds. Cowley Road offers fashionable cocktail bars, pubs, first class restaurants, comfortable cinemas and select shops. Extensive parks provide an oasis for the soul and offer relaxation. Finally, Oxford has its own music scene: the bands Radiohead and Superhead- along with many other stars- began their international careers here.
