SCOTLAND’S CAPITAL
Edinburgh lies on the picturesque Firth of Forth in the northwest of the British Isles. Edinburgh Castle stands in noble splendour on imposing basalt cliffs in the centre of the city, with medieval houses spread out around its symbolic presence, mysterious walls and interior courtyards, along with elegant neighbourhoods and fashionable shopping streets. The history of the Old Town goes back to the 11th century. Today, the city’s appearance is still dominated by fortress-like houses, ancient pubs and deep arbours. “New Town” was built in the 18th century and features majestic rows of houses with appealing tower rooms and balconies. History, legends and Scottish tradition are ever-present: the clans’ age-old coats of arms, churches, buildings and other witnesses to Scotland’s eventful history await visitors at every turn. Edinburgh is nonetheless an extremely lively, modern city with 450 000 inhabitants and has left the Middle Ages far behind.
BLUE LOCHS AND DEEP GLENS
Castles and palaces are everywhere- along with green hills, on which sheep and short-legged cows graze, shimmering blue lakes (lochs), deep glens, unspoiled highlands and wild stretches of coastline. Scotland’s magic lies in its cool but mild climate, medieval towns and mystical heaths, moors and grasslands that fire the imagination. Ultimately, this is the home of the strong-willed Scots, with their marked sense of identity and their appealing accent, spiced with the specific Scottish-Gaelic vocabulary. Bagpipes and kilts are by no means historical accessories, but part of everyday life, just like the country’s best known export: its whisky!
