WHERE CULTURES MEET
Toronto is Canada’s largest city and the capital of the province of Ontario. 50 years ago, it was a boring, sleepy provincial town- white, Anglo-Saxon and protestant. After the Second World War, a wave of immigration transformed Canada into a modern, lively metropolis. Today, the reflecting glass towers of the downtown financial centre are home to international corporations, surrounded by a mosaic comprising countless ethnic neighbourhoods. In Chinatown, in the Portuguese markets, the Greek taverns and Caribbean clubs, you can experience a colourful mixture of peoples and their original cultures. Toronto means “meeting place” in the Indian language: perfectly appropriate for this multicultural city. Despite its swift growth in recent decades, one aspect of a more provincial past has remained: compared to other large North American cities, Toronto is a clean, safe and eminently hospitable city: many people maintain that it is North America’s most likeable metropolis. Toronto also has an excellent transit system, many green spaces and recreational activities to suit every taste. The range of concerts, theatres, films and events is so large that no one is likely to be bored.
NIGHTLIFE AND WONDERLAND
There is something here for enthusiasts of history and architecture as well. Nathan Philips Square in the heart of the city is the ideal starting point for a sightseeing tour. Here, fountains surround Toronto’s New City Hall. On the eastern side, the old City Hall, built in 1899, stands beside Eaton Centre, a modern shopping centre. Queen Street and Yonge Street are popular streets for shopping and restaurants. The prime attractions in the summer are the open-air concerts at Ontario Place, a large amusement park with artificial islands in lake Ontario. On the shore of lake Ontario stands Harbourfront, where half of Toronto gathers on weekends to enjoy the parks, galleries, terraces and shopping centres. Street artists and music groups provide entertainment. Some three kilometres from the harbour, The Toronto Islands are a tempting destination with attractive parks and beaches. Outside Toronto is Canada’s Wonderland, the country’s largest amusement park with breathtaking rollercoasters and water parks.
