METROPOLISES SURROUNDED BY WILDERNESS
The French lamented the loss of their former colony of Canada to Britain in Voltaire’s words laconically as “a few acres of snow”. France seemed almost relieved to have got rid of its colony, while the British subsequently made a concerted effort to eradicate French influence. Down to our own day, these two cultures have contributed much to Canada’s character, forging a country with an unusual degree of fascination. Toronto with its skyscrapers, elegant suburbs and geometric street plan forms a fascinating contrast to Vancouver, nestled luxuriantly between the sea and the mountains, reflecting both the transoceanic metropolis and nature’s bounty.

BETWEEN THE LAKES AND THE ARCTIC
Canada is the world’s second largest country and boasts a vast variety of breathtaking scenery. The windswept coasts of the Maritimes are as much a part of Canada as the fertile valleys of Niagara, the endless horizons of the Prairies and the barren, frozen deserts of the Arctic. The Great Lakes are also among the Earth’s largest. Unspoiled nature, on a frequently daunting scale, exerts an almost magical fascination on visitors and Canadians alike. Canada’s climate is, however, not quite so hostile and forbidding as its reputation. In some areas it is comparable to Europe’s, even if the temperatures in the winter months average somewhat lower. Although Canada has welcomed millions of immigrants and continues to do so, it remains one of the world’s most thinly populated areas- one of Earth’s last remaining paradises, a country that must be seen to be believed.
