Fremantle, affectionately known as “Freo” is a busy, picturesque city with a southern European flair located where the Swan River reaches the sea. It is a half hours drive from Perth. The city was founded in 1829 and in contrast to Perth has changed little in recent years, retaining its old profile. Many of the older buildings are again resplendent in their colonial style, due primarily to the America’s Cup in 1987. The town is rated the world’s best preserved 19th century sea port and is today the most important shipping centre in Western Australia.

South Terrace has become Fremantle’s promenade. On Cappuccino Strip, genuine Italian espresso is served in the Dome Café while street artists entertain passers-by. Attractive local artworks are for sale in the market hall, alongside fruit and vegetables. Only a few steps from South Terrace is the Creative Native Gallery in High Street- probably the leading address for aboriginal artwork and musical instruments.
SWIMMING, SNORKELLING AND SAILING
Rottnest Island lies just off the coast of Fremantle. The island is known particularly for its quokkas (small marsupials), glorious beaches and an incredible wealth of marine flora and fauna. Visitors can enjoy swimming, snorkelling, fishing, sailing or playing golf. Incidentally, bicycles are the most common means of transportation. There are daily connections from Fremantle or Perth.
