Learn Chinese in Shanghai

THE PARIS OF THE ORIENT
Whether in art or architecture, music or fashion- nowhere else is China as lively or modern as in Shanghai. Once known as the “Paris of the Orient”, the city today is experiencing a comeback as a sophisticated cultural centre. China’s modern window on the world invites visitors to stay and awhile and admire with splendid colonial buildings on one side of the Huangpu and impressive skyscrapers on the other.

CHINA’S MOST IMPORTANT INDUSTRIAL CITY
With more than 19 million inhabitants, Shanghai is the largest and most important industrial city in the People’s Republic of China. Shanghai has the world’s largest harbour, handling, for example, 380 million tonnes of freight in 2004. The city is also a key transportation hub and a major centre for culture and education, with numerous universities, colleges, research institutes, theatres and museums.

A SKYSCRAPER
Over the past few years in Shanghai, skyscrapers have been popping up out of the ground like mushrooms, most being erected in Pudong, where one can also find the 420.6 metre, 88 storey-high ‘Jinmao Tower’ as well as the impressive ‘Pearl of the Orient Tower.’ The TV tower measures 467.9 metres in height. However, these are overshadowed by the ‘Shanghai World Financial Centre,’ standing tall at 492 metres and 101 storeys, making it the tallest building in the Republic of China and the third tallest in the world.
