Qingdao, which means “Green Island”, is a port city with some 7 million inhabitants in Shandong province in the east of the People’s Republic of China. It is today one of the few important seaside resorts and a popular excursion destination in China, where many people prefer to escape the heat of summer. The light blue sea, golden beaches between reddish granite cliffs and a seaside promenade with a pier, a climate like the Riviera that is sunny in the spring and autumn, those are the charms of Qingdao. 40 kilometres east of the beaches of Jiaozhou Bay lies Laoshan, one of China’s most famous mountains and the place where Taoism was born. It is the highest peak in a mountain chain on the Shandong Peninsula, rising to 1133 metres above sea level.
UNDER GERMAN RULE
In the late 19th century, the Prussians sought a base in East Asia. The German government accordingly decided in 1896 to acquire Qingdao as a strategic base, which was achieved a year later by military superiority. The port city was continuously under German rule from 1897 to 1914. Many buildings have been preserved from this era, including a brewery, a train station, Catholic and Protestant churches and the governor’s guesthouse. The colony was acquired by Japan after World War I and under the provisions of the Versailles Treaty it was handed back to China in 1922.
