PARADISE FOR DIVING SNORKELLING
Egypt, a huge square in the north eastern corner of Africa, occupies more than 1 million square kilometres. Over 90% of the country is barren desert, which is why 99% of the population are crowded into a mere 3% of the total land area, comprising the fertile Nile Valley and Delta. Hurghada on the Red Sea is undoubtedly the main tourist centre. Sharm El-Sheikh, the modern tourist centre at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula is especially popular with diving enthusiasts. The Red Sea is one of the world’s best diving areas, and diving and snorkelling are accordingly the most popular activities in Egypt. The sea off the Egyptian coast offers an underwater world rich with coral, crustaceans and fish in every conceivable colour and shape.

«WHAT WILL BE, WILL BE»
Despite the tourist boom and modernization, everyday life for most Egyptians has changed little over the centuries. The 20th century has of course materialized in the shape of Coca Cola, Levis and television, but for the Fellahin, primarily employed in farming, things haven’t changed much. The pervasive attitude of Egyptians (“What will be, will be”), born of millennia of epidemics, hunger, occupation and floods, still predominates. The lives of most Egyptians are thus dominated by the same circumstances as the lives of previous generations.

THE NILE- THE SOURCE OF ALL THINGS
Egypt’s history is inexorably linked to the Nile. Since the first settlement, the river has been the source of economic, social, political and religious life. It was the Nile that made life and culture possible along its banks in Egypt. Without the river, Egypt would be nothing but desert. This can be seen by the fact that the river is contained in the west by the Libyan desert and in the west by the Nubian desert and the Arabian desert, where water exists only in a few oasis, making agriculture and culture itself impossible. Only the fertile mud that the Nile spreads over the earth when it floods, allows crops to be grown and makes agriculture possible. The high clay content of the Nile mud is also used for building houses.
